BCL Wood Ceilings at Macallan Distillery HQ

A Fusion of Tradition & Modern Craftsmanship

The new Macallan Distillery and visitor experience was completed as part of a £500 million investment in the Macallan brand and features BCL wood ceilings throughout its new welcome and main reception areas. The £140 million distillery was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners and installed by fit-out specialist contractor, Linear Projects. The new distillery will allow production of Macallan to increase by a third overall and the visitor experience forms the centre-piece of its stylish new makeover.

Located on the Easter Elchies estate, the distillery features bold architecture all the way through its scheme and BCL’s FSC certified Prime EU Oak acoustic timber panelsare the main feature of its reception area, a nod to The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks. Spanning over 361 m2 of the reception, the acoustic wood panel configuration selected was Class B, with 44 mm x 19 mm slats and a 21 mm gap. The slats have also had a factory applied FR lacquer of clear Class 0 fire protection to ensure fire safety without maintenance. Using BCL’s secret fixings, the timber ceilings are given a smooth continuous finish, with no visible screws or nails.

As per every BCL wood slat ceiling, we provided significant support throughout the entire process, from design to manufacture and then installation. By using our rapid installation system, we managed to keep Linear project’s site-time down as well as ensuring on site waste was kept to a minimum, resulting in a more efficient delivery that saved both time & cost.

Macallan Distillery has already been awarded the RIAS Award 2019, the RIBA Award for Scotland 2019 and, as of writing, is currently shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2019. BCL are proud to have added value and helped realise such an interesting and beautiful project that is entirely deserving of all its awards and nominations to date.
