A Modern Communal Sports Hub with Elegant Timber Design
LA Architects designed Irvine Leisure Centre, also known as the portal, working alongside McLaughlin and Harvey Construction and features both wood ceilings and timber wall panels from BCL. Completed in early 2017, the £20 million leisure centre was built to deliver a new communal sports facility for the people in Irvine. The centre consists of a main foyer for exhibitions and meetings, a café, a 25m pool, fitness suite, 6 court multi-use sports hall and courtyards with gardens.
The main pool area features a wooden slatted ceiling in American Yellow Poplar, FR treated to EN13501-1 and with integrated lighting and M&E air extraction. As per any swimming pool or marine grade timber panel system from BCL, all necessary supporting grid used PPC Aluminium and all fixings in A4 grade stainless steel, which features a higher carbon content, providing increased erosion resistance in high moisture scenarios.
Acoustic timber panels were also used in the sport hall areas, with BCL providing a cost effective and impact resistant solution for the client, delivering both fire (EN13501-1) and acoustic performance (ISO 11654:1997) to the required performance levels.
