Progress on Edith Neville School, Kings Cross

Progress on Edith Neville School

Update on BCL’s work Edith Neville School in Kings Cross, led by Peter Taylor Associates and Neilcott Construction, this project uses 40 x 25 mm PEFC credited Siberian Larch panels for the internal ceiling system.

The panels are being fixed to achieve acoustic class A and have been coated with a factory sprayed white pigmented lacquer and treated with fire protection class 1/0 SSF which will require no maintenance. This system has been manufactured by BCL on a supply and fix basis and will cover 485 m2 of the school, over the main reception, indoor gallery, foyer and halls.

We look forward to seeing the finished result of this important project.

White Hart Lane Station Completed

White Hart Lane Station Completed

BCL are proud to announce that work on White Hart Lane station has been completed. Working alongside Taylor Woodrow and Fereday Pollard Architects this project replaced the original building with a new, landmark design. There is now step free access from the street to the platform and a big increase in the capacity for event days such as Tottenham Hotspur matches.

BCL manufactured and installed the stations ceiling system using 44 x 144 mm Western Red Cedar panels spanning over 420 m2 of the ticketing hall. The panels selected were of Class A configuration over black acoustic fabric, perfect for reducing the noise from both trains and passengers.  All timber has had Class 1/0 Fire Protection applied by factory impregnation and were manufactured off site, reducing both waste and installation times.

For your next project, why not consider Dragon Timber? A modern take on the traditional Japanese method of charring timber it comes with an incredible 10 year warranty on its coating finish!

The traditional Japanese method (also known as Yakisugi) has been used on small projects for generations as a way of enhancing and preserving wood. However, unlike other uncoated forms of charred timber, DragonWOOD does not ash or rub off its char onto objects such as clothes through the use of a special thermo-applied coating. With this and the reassurance of extended warranties, is ideal for large scale commercial applications, providing a fantastic return on investment from its unique appearance.

The timber itself can be selected from a range of species, mainly the incredibly sustainable and cost effective Nordic Spruce, coming with a 25 year service life and a 10 year warranty for the coating that comes in a variety of fantastic and unique colours on exterior applications.  

Andrew Goto from Timber Focus had this to say of how Dragon Timber fits in with BCL’s system:

“The BCL panel system is ideal to install Dragon Timber for aesthetic purposes, functionality and durability. This is because there are no exposed nails meaning the finish is not compromised and ensures the timber will meet its coatings 10 year service life. The Dragon Timber is also prefinished therefore it fits in with BCL’s rapid installation times and it can be cut in a wide range of lengths to suit all systems.”

DragonWOOD can be treated with a factory applied lacquer of fire protection up to Euro Class B to meet Building Regulations and Construction Products Regulations. The timber is also FSC certified, making this product ideal for modern commercial applications.

The Importance of being PEFC and FSC Certified

In the wake of the current climate crisis, it is of great importance that every company works to reduce their carbon footprint, especially in the construction industry. By using timber, a renewable and a greenhouse positive product, at BCL we are already making steps to reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings we work on. Trees are essential to all kinds of life and it is vital that they are used in a sustainable way.

PEFC and FSC are just two of the many companies working to certify that timber is sourced ethically. They work to protect forests globally, meaning “we can all benefit from the products that forests provide now, while ensuring these forests will be around for generations to come” (PEFC). These companies run a global system which consists of Forest Management and Chain of Custody. By working with stakeholders across the globe, they allow consumers to use certified timber from well managed forests worldwide. These forests harvest timber in a sustainable way, by replanting trees and taking care of their workers with fair pay and working hours.

Through using timber from these certified sources, we are reducing the need for other carbon heavy materials such as aluminium in construction. Throughout the production process, one tonne of aluminium releases 9.3 tonnes of CO2 whereas timber actually absorbs 1.7 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. This example alone shows the importance of replacing carbon positive materials with natural products. Obtaining timber from these accredited sources will not only reduce the carbon footprint your building has, but will support correct management of our forests, guaranteeing this valuable material will continue to be widely available for the future.

London Construction Awards 2019

Here at BCL we are delighted to announce that we have made the shortlist for three awards at this year’s London Construction Awards. For our work on London Bridge Station we have been nominated for Architectural Project of the Year, Regeneration Project of the Year and Fit-Out Project of the Year.

Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the £1 billion redevelopment of London Bridge took 5 years to complete, with our Western Red Cedar panels as the main feature of the new concourse, covering over 7000 square metres in three distinct patterns. This ceiling system is clad with high acoustic performance Alpha panels, which provide both class A and B acoustics, perfect for a busy station as the open space effectively absorbs sound from the passengers and trains, reducing the overall level of noise. Using our secret fixings for a smooth finish with integrated lighting troughs, the panels have also been structured in a way that protects from an upward blast in the event of a terrorist threat, given the prominence of the station.

BCL ensured the highest standard of work was produced, with support and knowledge through every step, from design to installation. This striking project has already been named winner of the RIBA London Award and Project of the Year from AJ100 2019, and is currently in the shortlist for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. It is a huge achievement to be shortlisted for three more awards and we are pleased to see our panels getting the recognition they deserve. We’re looking forward to the result on November 27th.

The RIBA Stirling Prize 2019

Named after architect James Stirling, the Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize is without a doubt the most prestigious award in architecture. RIBA President Ben Derbyshire explained that although the buildings “could hardly be more diverse in typology and scale” they have “ground-breaking innovation, extraordinary creativity and the highest quality materials and detailing” in common.

Among the six varied nominees, BCL is over the moon to announce that two of our projects have made the cut. Both London Bridge Station and The Macallan Distillery have already won their fair share of awards, so it is no surprise that these two are up for the Stirling Prize.

London Bridge Station

Designed by Grimshaw Architects, London Bridge underwent a £1 billion redevelopment that took five years to complete, with BCL Western Red Cedar panels at the heart of it. The main concourse is clad with our high performance Alpha acoustic panel system. This allows the sound from the busy station to be absorbed effectively, reducing the level of noise from passengers and trains. The fully demountable panels use our secret fixings to ensure a smooth finish and involve integrated lighting troughs. The new concourse allows a lot more natural light into the station, taking away the usual dark and gloomy feel from London train stations.

The Macallan Distillery

The Macallan Distillery was completed as part of a £500 million investment in the Macallan brand. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, this building is beautifully different from the inside out. Detail is everything here, with the choice in timber species selected as EU oak, as a nod to their sherry-seasoned oak casks. BCL panels cover 361 m2 of the main reception area, with all being covered in a factory applied lacquer of clear class 0 fire protection, providing fire safety without needing maintenance.  By using natural materials such as local stone, a living green roof and of course, timber, the distillery provides interesting and refreshing experience for visitors.

Regardless of the outcome of October 8th, it is already such an achievement to have two contrasting and stunning buildings that heavily feature our timber make the shortlist. We wish all the nominees the best of luck.

The Macallan Distillery

 

The New Macallan Distillery, Scotland

The new Macallan Distillery and visitor experience was completed earlier this year as part of a £500 million investment in the Macallan brand. The £140 million distillery was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners and installed by Linear Projects.

BCL’s FSC certified Prime EU Oak panels are the main feature of the reception area, a nod to The Macallan’s signature sherry-seasoned oak casks. Spanning over 361 m2 of the reception, the panel selected was a Class B configuration with 44 mm x 19 mm slats with a 21 mm gap. This class of acoustic panels will effectively absorb sound, keeping noise in the reception area to a minimum. The slats have also had a factory applied lacquer of clear Class 0 fire protection to ensure fire safety without needing maintenance. Using BCL’s secret fixings, the timber is given a smooth finish, with no visible screws or nails. 

As per every BCL panel system, we offered support throughout the entire process, from design to manufacture and then installation. 

Macallan Distillery has already been awarded the RIAS Award 2019, the RIBA Award for Scotland 2019 and is currently shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2019 alongside another project of ours; London Bridge Station. We are proud to have worked on such an interesting and beautiful project that we can all see is entirely deserving of these awards and nominations.

UK Hydrographic Office

 

UK Hydrographic Office Complete 

BCL are pleased to announce our part in the completion of the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton, which was officially opened in April 2019 by the Princess Royal. The renovation of the headquarters was led by AHR Architects, BAM Construction and Mace group, with BCL’s panels as its defining feature.

 

BCL supplied and installed the internal cladding for the space, using Siberian Larch slats measured at 19 x 44 mm fixed to Oak battens in the centre of each board for support. The timber spans over 2000 m2 of the building. Each slat had been treated with class 0 fire protection and has grey acoustic fabric between timber battens.

Adam Spall, the regional director at AHR Architects had this to say of BCL’s work:

“The larch clad baffles in the UK Hydrographic Office atrium are the central design feature of the building. They perform a critical role in terms of diffusing daylight and reducing reverberation but presented a huge technical challenge to achieve the sinuous curves while being installed at high level.

AHR brought in the BCL timber team at a very early stage of the project to see if their panelised system could achieve the curved design while maintaining the appearance of a 40m long continuous timber beam. The bespoke panels have achieved this perfectly and the larch clad baffles are the centrepiece of this fantastic building.”

LBS - RIBA & AJ100 Award

LBS wins AJ100 & RIBA London Project of the Year 

We are delighted to announce that London Bridge Station, designed by Grimshaw and delivered by Costain, has won both the RIBA London and the AJ100 Project of the Year 2019!

The central feature of this project is the BCL Timber ceiling system that spans across the central concourse. Lauded by RIBA as 'truly impressive & joyous' - it is a testement to design flexibility of the BCL system, allowing Grimshaw to create a unique timber ceiling that not only looks fantastic, but delivers several levels of acoustic performance, whilst integrating all of the techncial aspects the project demanded.

Oxford Science Park Progress Update

 

Progress Update: The Schrödinger Building

BCL are working hard on The Oxford Science Park’s new state of the art office and laboratory, the Schrödinger Building, and it is almost complete. Project architects Bogle and Main Contractors Barnwood Construction elected to use the BCL panel system on internal walls and ceilings, along with an external canopy. Here are some progress photos of BCL’s work. 

Covering over 400m2 the project is using BCL panels with 19 x 25mm Siberian Larch slats, and with 50% open area the panels are working at an acoustic class A. The timber is fire treated with a factory applied lacquer, giving it class 0 ssf fire protection.

UK Hydrographic Office - Update

 

Progress Update: UK Hydrographic Office

BCL have now finished installing approx 1,700sqm of Class A acoustic timber panels to the interior of the new UK Hydrographic Office for BAM Construction. The horizontal Siberian Larch baffles curve on plan to create dramatic 'waves' across the atrium, whilst also delivering high performance absoprtion to the space.  

The project, designed by AHR Global, provides a beautiful new setting to house the UK government's world leading body in hydrography and maritime cartography. BCL were brought on early by AHR and are delighted to be delivering another high profile commercial project with BAM construction.

NMA Phase 2

The National Memorial Aboretum, Events Pavilion

After successful completion of the stunning Remembrance Centre at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire in 2016, BCL have been brought on board for the brand new Events Pavilion at the same site in Alrewas.

As before we are working with Glenn Howells Architects and Main Contractor Stepnell. Completion of the new building is due for later in 2018 and it will allow the NMA to host a wide range of larger and more events throughout the whole year, which the current Events Marquee does not allow for.

The new Events Pavilion will bring flexible event spaces including meeting rooms, a bar; allowing space for drinks receptions and evening functions, and dedicated catering facilities which means the NMA can host banquets for up to 300 guests.

 

BCL are excited to be part of the team once again creating such an important space at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Coventry University, Science and Health Building

BCL Panels Part of Coventry University’s New World-Class Facility


The new £37 million construction of Coventry University’s new state of the art Science and Health Building has been completed. Inside the new structure, built by main contractors BAM, there is a stunning communal area with BCL panels at the heart of the design.
Specified by Broadway Malyan the flexibility of the BCL system allowed the project architects to maintain the aesthetic they wanted to achieve while meeting the acoustic needs of the open spaces. 

 

There are several different panel configurations in this project, all designed with American White Oak slats. The BCL panels, which cover 1200m2 of the Coventry University building, are fully demountable, allowing access to the services behind. The slats have a factory applied lacquer coating providing a class 0 ssf fire protection and the different panel layouts offer both class A and class C acoustic absorption.

 


The £300,000 BCL system was designed and manufactured by BCL and installed by BAM. The BCL project was completed in 12 weeks, as with all projects BCL provided support throughout the whole process from design and specification through to installation.  Constructing a world-class University facility is a project BCL have enjoyed being part of.

The Charter Building, Uxbridge

BCL Panels Central Feature in New Charter Building Revamp

The Charter Building in Uxbridge, a once outdated office building has now been fully renovated into a modern ‘ground scraper’. BCL acoustic panels are a proud feature in the impressive open-plan reception space, covering just over 360m2.

 

Architects De Novo Architecture and main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland chose the BCL system, which was also selected by both previously for the ‘Thames Tower’ project in Reading. The design for The Charter Building used FSC Idigbo timber in 44 x 44mm slats configuration.

The panels have a 50% open area (44mm gaps) and perform at an acoustic rating of ‘Class A’. The Class 0 SSF lacquer applied to the timber was also pigmented giving the slats a light brown/honey colour, following the bespoke colour matching service provided by BCL on every internal project.

BCL, providing our full design management service in Revit / BIM, liaised with De Novo in the early stages to formulate panel layouts and coordinate detail design. Then, provided our direct installation service to the main contractor B&K, phased in two stages to align with their overall construction programme.

Thames Tower

BCL Bamboo Panels in Thames Tower Renovation

The old 1970’s tower block located just outside Reading train station in the heart of the town is now the exciting, newly renovated office space; Thames Tower. Designed by De Novo Architecture and constructed by Bowmer & Kirkland the build was completed in May 2017.

Striking BCL timber panels feature heavily in the grand reception area on the ground floor.

The eye catching Bamboo ceiling and wall panels cover 210m2. The panels achieve an acoustic Class B, they are made with 19 x 44mm bamboo slats with a 19mm gap. A fire retardant lacquer covers the slats, giving system a Class 0 SSF rating.

The system cost £90,000 and was designed, manufactured and installed by BCL.

STEM

Hertha Ayrton STEM Centre, Sheffield Hallam University

The new STEM facility at Sheffield Hallam University is now open. The fresh modern atrium which replaces the old characterless area between the Eric Mensforth and the Sheaf buildings is now the vibrant link between the two.

The £11m refurbishment was built to help support teaching and research in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The project’s main contractor was Houlton & Sons and the space was designed by Watson Batty Architects who chose a vast BCL acoustic ceiling system to help complete the new fresh space. The timber ceiling system was designed, manufactured and installed by BCL.

The BCL system cost £190,000 and used over 790m2 of US Ash timber. The timber slats were 69 x 19mm with a 31mm gap giving the system a class B acoustic value. The timber was impregnated with a fire treatment, making the whole system class 0 SSF protected.

The BCL ceiling was completed in early 2017,and the Hertha Ayrton STEM centre opened in April 2017. The exciting new space is now being enjoyed by all at Sheffield Hallam University.

BH2 Leisure Complex - Sav

BH2 Leisure Complete with BCL External Cladding System

The new Bournemouth Leisure Complex, BH2 Leisure is now complete, and BCL panels feature as part of the impressive external cladding system.

The new leisure centre complete with restaurants, car park and a multi-screen cinema was designed by Broadway Malyan, with Vinci Construction as the main contractor.

BCL completed in May 2016, with the cladding project taking 12 weeks and costing £350,000.

Over 1000m2 of Siberian Larch prefabricated panels were used at BH2. The complex has BCL timber 'screens' incorporated into its external design as well as curved timber panels. The system has fully concealed fixings giving the building a smooth, contemporary appearance.

Lord's Cricket Ground, Warner Stand

Renovation of the Warner Stand at Lord's to Include BCL Panels

Work has begun on the rebuild of the Warner Stand at the Lord's Cricket Ground, home of the Marylebone Cricket Club. BCL Timber Projects have been selected by project architects Populous and main contractors BAM to be part of the transformation.

The new look stand will be using 1,000 sqm of BCL panels.  The panels are made with European Oak slats, 44mm x 19mm with a clear intumescent factory-applied, class 0 ssf lacquer coating. The system features a bespoke ‘egg & bacon’ coloured backing fabric for the internal wall panels, the famous colours of the MCC. 

The BCL project in the Warner Stand includes both internal and external BCL panels. It will take 6 weeks to complete and cost £250,000. The project will be finished in February 2017, with overall completion of the prestigious new stand due in April 2017. 

The capacity of the new stand will be 2,656 with many less restricted viewing seats and more amenities including three bars and a restaurant, all with greatly improved access.

National Memorial Arboretum

National Memorial Arboretum Remembrance Centre

The brand new National Memorial Arboretum Remembrance Centre, completed in October 2016, has now officially opened its doors to the public.

The Arboretum’s new Remembrance Centre which sits comfortably within its surroundings at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, is wrapped in 1,500 sqm of BCL Timber Panels. BCL were selected to be involved in the project by Glenn Howells Architects and main contractors Stepnell.

The National Memorial Arboretum external envelope took BCL 12 weeks to complete, using a prefabricated panel system with fully concealed fixings. The cladding uses Siberian larch, in an L-shape profile, with a 3 coat, factory applied pigmented lacquer coating, known as a ‘pre-weathering’ treatment, which mimics the colour of already aged timber.

The pre-weathering treatment that has been used means that the building will retain a uniform colour and show minimal signs of aging. An important feature given the unfading memorial that the building serves to achieve.
