The construction of the new Sackler Centre provides state-of-the-art workshops and education areas for visitors of the V&A Museum . A critical design feature of this project was the undulating timber ceiling and wall linings that run throughout the lecture theatre and around the main foyer of the building. The intricate design involved various curved elements at very tight radii, making traditional approaches highly impractical.

The ceiling also runs at low levels and thus was subject to human contact. Siberian Larch therefore was the recommended species of timber as whilst fulfilling the aesthetic goals set by Softroom, it provided a hard wearing and cost-effective solution.

Leicester Highcross Mall is a complex ceiling with two inwardly-curving skylight areas which join the new and existing shopping malls. The geometry is curved in cross section and also contains a gradual slope between the buildings

This project is a prime example of the efficiency benefits of delivering large and often complex surfaces in the BCL panel system, resulting in a tight installation of 6 weeks. This provided substantial savings to the main contractor in time and money over traditional site-fix methods.

The National Assembly Building for Wales, also known as ‘The Senedd’ is one of the most recognisable buildings in the UK and a landmark project in the use of timber ceiling systems by BCL. The building has gained worldwide recognition for its beautiful undulating timber ceiling, with highly complex geometry and sustainable design, culminating in the project being shortlisted for The Stirling Prize in 2006.

BCL’s team designed a panel layout that allowed the complete ceiling, totalling over 3,000 sqm, to be created using only 35 different panel shapes, 99% of which could be flat packed and curved on site, helping to keep logistical costs to a minimum and maximise the speed of installation.
