BH2 Leisure Complete with BCL External Cladding System

The new Bournemouth Leisure Complex, BH2 Leisure is now complete, and BCL panels feature as part of the impressive external cladding system.

The new leisure centre complete with restaurants, car park and a multi-screen cinema was designed by Broadway Malyan, with Vinci Construction as the main contractor.

BCL completed in May 2016, with the cladding project taking 12 weeks and costing £350,000.

Over 1000m2 of Siberian Larch prefabricated panels were used at BH2. The complex has BCL timber 'screens' incorporated into its external design as well as curved timber panels. The system has fully concealed fixings giving the building a smooth, contemporary appearance.

Lord's Cricket Ground, Warner Stand

Renovation of the Warner Stand at Lord's to Include BCL Panels

Work has begun on the rebuild of the Warner Stand at the Lord's Cricket Ground, home of the Marylebone Cricket Club. BCL Timber Projects have been selected by project architects Populous and main contractors BAM to be part of the transformation.

The new look stand will be using 1,000 sqm of BCL panels.  The panels are made with European Oak slats, 44mm x 19mm with a clear intumescent factory-applied, class 0 ssf lacquer coating. The system features a bespoke ‘egg & bacon’ coloured backing fabric for the internal wall panels, the famous colours of the MCC. 

The BCL project in the Warner Stand includes both internal and external BCL panels. It will take 6 weeks to complete and cost £250,000. The project will be finished in February 2017, with overall completion of the prestigious new stand due in April 2017. 

The capacity of the new stand will be 2,656 with many less restricted viewing seats and more amenities including three bars and a restaurant, all with greatly improved access.

National Memorial Arboretum

National Memorial Arboretum Remembrance Centre

The brand new National Memorial Arboretum Remembrance Centre, completed in October 2016, has now officially opened its doors to the public.

The Arboretum’s new Remembrance Centre which sits comfortably within its surroundings at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, is wrapped in 1,500 sqm of BCL Timber Panels. BCL were selected to be involved in the project by Glenn Howells Architects and main contractors Stepnell.

The National Memorial Arboretum external envelope took BCL 12 weeks to complete, using a prefabricated panel system with fully concealed fixings. The cladding uses Siberian larch, in an L-shape profile, with a 3 coat, factory applied pigmented lacquer coating, known as a ‘pre-weathering’ treatment, which mimics the colour of already aged timber.

The pre-weathering treatment that has been used means that the building will retain a uniform colour and show minimal signs of aging. An important feature given the unfading memorial that the building serves to achieve.

News - London Bridge Update

London Bridge Redevelopment: Phase 1 Complete

Phase one of Network Rail’s London Bridge station redevelopment is now complete. BCL have delivered the vast timber ceiling which can now be seen by commuters using part of the station’s brand new concourse.

As part of the London Bridge station refurbishment the structure which supports the railway platforms is being replaced by a series of pre cast concrete bridge decks. The underside of the new bridge decks becomes the ceiling of the main concourse which has been clad with our high performance “Alpha” acoustic timber panel system.

The BCL “Alpha” panel system is using 7,000 square metres of western red cedar panels in three distinct patterns, providing class A and B sound absorption to reduce noise from passengers and trains. The panels are fire treated to Euro class B, fully demountable, have fully concealed fixings, and involve integrated lighting troughs.

The BCL panel system was chosen by project architects, Grimshaw. The London Bridge Station project is being delivered by Costain and is currently on target for completion in spring 2018.

News - Mary Rose Museum

 

 The Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth

The new Mary Rose museum designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, Pringle Brandon Perkins+Will and built by construction firm Warings opened at the end of May 2013. It is one of the highest profile heritage projects in recent years, due largely to the complex geometry of the cladding envelope. Further complicating the construction process, the building was erected around the Mary Rose itself, which cannot be moved due to the constant preservation work it requires.

The BCL system used 1,200 square metres of black 'solignum' architecturally stained Western Red Cedar, which was fastened using BCL's 'secret fixings'. The project took 20 weeks to complete and cost £510,000.

The 'hull' of the museum was created by firstly modelling the facade in 3-D to establish the geometry relative to the orthoganl steel frame. The exact position of each support bracket was then identified and given x,y,z coordinates, relative to the major grid lines and datums. Once the brackets were installed, the vertical fixing studs were then fixed in place to create the shell, ready for the black stained horizontal slats.

 BCL were also tasked with unique job of engraving designated panels to mimic the very same ciphers used on the Mary Rose to designate crew members belongings and sleeping areas among other things.

Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls

BCL Alpha Panels Feature in the New Look Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls' project Excelsior was completed in 2015 by Willmott Dixon Construction using the BCL Timber Panel system. IID Architects used BCL timber panels in their design for internal ceilings and on the buildings external canopy.

Designed to an acoustic Class A level the internal panels successfully absorb the sounds created in the new look school. Siberian Larch was the perfect choice for the HASG project as it works well in highly exposed areas and applications where damage such as scrapes and knocks are likely.

The Siberian Larch BCL timber “Alpha” panels had an intumescent lacquer coating to provide a Class 0 surface spread of flame (SSF) rating for fire protection.

The BCL timber panel system was designed with integrated lighting and concealed fixings which created a superb finish for the project, which used over 1500 square metres of Siberian Larch panels.

Norwich Medical Research Building

Norwich Medical Research Building Wrapped in BCL Timber Panels

The Norwich Medical Research Building (NMRB) project was completed in 2014, and has since been re-named the ‘Bob Champion Research and Education Building’. This exciting biomedical research centre, designed by Hawkins Brown Architects for the University of East Anglia (UEA), provides world-class research laboratories targeting improved patient care and will place UEA at its centre, strengthening Norwich’s already excellent reputation as a leading research site of biomedical sciences.

BCL’s timber panels were chosen by Hawkins Brown to clad the two linear blocks which form the main structure of the NMRB, and are interconnected by a triple height atrium.

Three different panel configurations were used in order to create a unique textured finish to the external envelope, also incorporating the UEA logo embossed into the façade.

BCL were employed as full envelope solution by the Main Contractors, RG Carter and provided a comprehensive installation service of over 2,000sqm Western Red Cedar panels to the project. As standard, all BCL panels were manufactured and installed using ‘secret-fixings’ creating an uninterrupted, clean and modern finish.

 

This significant research building will enable new treatments for diseases affecting ageing populations to be studied by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. BCL enjoyed being part of the project.

London Business School

BCL Selected for London Business School’s ‘Sammy Ofer Centre’

BCL’s high performance “Alpha” timber panel system has been selected by Sheppard Robson Architects to be used in the new, state of the art teaching centre for London Business School.

Sheppard Robson’s design for the grade II listed Old Marylebone Town Hall Council House’s will increase the teaching space of the school by 70%. An adaptable design means the space will also be used by Westminster City Council for its meetings.

The new teaching location, just minutes from Regents Park, will be known as the ‘Sammy Ofer Centre’, following a donation to project funding from industrialist and principal of Quantum Pacific Group, Idan Ofer.

The prestigious new ‘Sammy Ofer Centre’ includes six lecture theatres seating between 80 and 100 students, thirty-five seminar rooms, social space, study areas and a library.

BCL’s “Alpha” timber panel system has been selected for the walls and ceilings of the lecture theatres. Sound absorption is a key consideration for a lecture theatre, making BCL’s Class A acoustic panels the perfect choice for main contractor Wates Construction to use.

American White Oak has been chosen for the panel system and the timber will have an intumescent lacquer coating to provide a Euro Class B surface spread of flame (SSF) for fire protection and provide added protection to the wall panels.

The timber panel system will be fully demountable with integrated lighting troughs and concealed fixings. The ‘secret-fixings’ show no visible screws or nails which creates a smooth modern finish.

The BCL “Alpha” panels are designed, manufactured and installed by BCL, with completion of the redevelopment project due in 2017.

West Central Leisure, Bournemouth

BCL Timber Screens to Feature at West Central Leisure Complex

BCL are pleased to announce that our timber panels will be integrated into the development of the new West Central Leisure Complex, in Bournemouth. The regeneration project will feature restaurants, shops and a 2,000 seat cinema.

The development, designed by Broadway Malyan, features a number of timber “screens” that will be incorporated into the external cladding system. Vinci, the contractor of the project, has chosen our high durability and hard density ‘Siberian Larch’ timber for the exterior.

The installation will cost £350,000; it will have a prefabricated panel system with fully concealed fixings, creating a sleek and modern look to the building.

The whole project build will take 60 weeks and is set for completion in May this year. BCL design, manufacture and install our own panels and the fitting of these will take 12 weeks.

National Memorial Arboretum

BCL ‘Pre-weathered’ Timber cladding system chosen for £15.7M NMA Transformation

BCL has recently been selected by Stepnell Construction & Glen Howells Architects to deliver over 1,500sqm of Siberian Larch walls & ceilings at the National Memorial Arboretum (http://www.thenma.org.uk/about-us/) in Staffordshire. The new remembrance centre sees a thorough transformation of the space, increasing its teaching capacity from 10,000 to up to 25,000 school children per year and a modern upgrade of the café and circulation spaces.

A unique feature of the timber panel system is the application of a ‘pre-weathering’ grey stain, mimicking the appearance of grey timber. This treatment will mean that despite the system having various sections of UV exposed and fully shaded areas, with some fully internal, there will be very little colour change across the building during it’s lifetime, minimising any signs of ageing. An important feature given the timeless and unfading memorial that the building serves to achieve.

The client, The Royal British Legion, plans to open the building to the public in May and allow full access to the new centre and the nearly 300 statues, artworks and memorials around the unique site. BCL is  very proud to be part of this important project and to have the opportunity in adding value to a lasting tribute to the men & women of our National Service.

Highgate Junior School

Alpha Panels to be fitted at Highgate Junior School

We are pleased to announce that our acoustic panels will be incorporated into the new build of Highgate Junior School in London.

We’ve worked with Architype and Wates, who are the architect and contractor of the project, to ensure that the most appropriate and effective timber panels would be used.

BCL’s panels have been installed in the school’s Main Hall using our multi-width European Oak slatted timber panel system fitted into the school’s high level soffit, to create a modern and clean look.

To continue this modern theme throughout the school BCL’s Siberian Larch “Alpha” panel system has been fitted by ourselves into classrooms as well as circulation areas.

The timber panels are Class A sound absorption, to reduce ambient sounds throughout the school. A lacquer coating has been applied to provide a Euro Class B SSF (surface spread of flame) and to protect the timber against general weathering.

There will be integrated lighting within the panels, fully demountable system and concealed fixings, creating a nice clean finish to a beautifully minimalistic design. The changes will cost £600,000 to build and will be completed April this year.

NEWS - LONDON BRIDGE REDEVELOPMENT

London Bridge Redevelopment

We are delighted to be part of the £400m redevelopment of London Bridge Station, a project delivered by Costain and designed by Grimshaw.

BCL will deliver the vast, stunning timber ceiling that will form the main concourse. Our alpha panels combine aesthetic properties with Class A acoustic absorption to tackle noise pollution and reverberation from passengers and trains. Designed with a ‘bomb-blast’ grid system to ensure structural integrity of the ceiling against upwards pressure blasts and with fire rated EU Class B panels to ensure the building stays strong and stable in case of a fire.

The station’s capacity will expand to accommodate up to 75 million passengers a year, with a huge concourse larger than Wembley Stadium. The project is part of the £6.5bn Thameslink programme to connect with the new Crossrail developments.

BCL were brought in early and have been able to add significant value to the project through our dedicated BIM modelling design service.

News - Boldrewood

BCL Win Contract for Boldrewood Campus, University of Southampton

BCL Timber Projects are to be used again, on another Southampton University project. This time we will be providing over 700 square metres of internal acoustic timber panelling to the Maritime Centre for Learning, Boldrewood campus.

The joint venture between the University and The Lloyd's Register will provide a unique world-leading hub for innovation and learning, in the fields of maritime engineering and technology. 

BCL have been developing panel layout and manufacture drawings with designers, Grimshaw Architects and are currently ready to begin production. Installation will beign in May.

News - Sheffield Market

Timber 'weave' panels first fix at Sheffield Moor

BCL have started installing the unique 'timber weave' panels at Sheffield Moor Market. The panels use Western Red Cedar, woven through vertical timber battens to create a truly unique wall system.

The project, costing a total of £17.5M will completely reinvigorate the old market area with over 200 shops and stalls, housed in a 79,000 sq ft area. Main contractor on the job, Bowmer & Kirkland (who BCL have worked with several times in the past) have tasked BCL with the full design, manufacture and installation of the job.

A true landmark project in environmentally conscious construction, the Blue Planet in Chatterley Valley is the UK’s first carbon positive, BREEAM excellent rated logistics park. It was therefore essential that the procurement routes of this project met the same exacting environmental standards and that the design quality of the cladding itself reflected the high profile nature of the project.

Horizontal and vertical cladding panels were manufactured off-site, then installed and aligned using BCL’s dynamic bracketing system along with all aluminium feature trims.

Walsall College is an ambitious £38M project to deliver a number of specialised music, business and IT academies within one centralised college campus. Designed by Dyer Associates, the central feature within the main atrium is a striking timber lined flexible learning pod.


The BCL panel system not only helped facilitate the installation speeds required to stay on track and deliver the project in time, but also helped deliver the complex slat arrangements efficiently and with a consistently high level of quality
