BCL Timber Projects News

Wellington Academy, Andover

A BCL external cladding system has been specified on the new high profile Wellington Academy near Andover. The Academy, twinned with the prestigous Wellington College, Berkshire is to provide state of the art teaching facilities to around 1,150 pupils by April 2011. The chosen system was a combination of Western Red Cedar & black stained European White Oak, covering a total of 3,200 m2. The project, designed by leading architects BDP and built by Kier Moss, creates a perfect harmony of aesthetics and sustainability and the control of waste acheived from the BCL system is a contributing factor to this. BCL are also very pleased to continue the long standing relationship between both Kier and BDP.

Cressex School - High Wycombe

BCL are currently installing another internal bamboo system for BAM construction, this time at Cressex School in High Wycombe. The internal wall lining creates a beautiful facade to the central lift shaft, at the heart of the main atrium. The bamboo has also been coated in a protective clear lacquer to allow easy maintainence. The system came out on top during late tender stage for BCL, again due to bamboo's low cost and high quality finish.

Cressex Community school is part of the Building Schools for Future (Wave 2) One School Pathfinder funding for Buckinghamshire and will provide brand new teaching facilities to over 1000 students in the local area. The school is built under the exacting environmental standards of the One Pathfinder programme, requiring a 60% redutcion in Carbon and is currntly on track to receive the BREEAM 'excellent' rating. Bamboo is a perfect choice to align with these environmental standards, being the most sustainable 'building timber' resource in the world, with a growth cycle of just 5 years, compared with the average 40-50 years of traditional timbers. It can come FSC certified for chain of custody (COC) and is such an effective sequester of carbon that it is measured as 'Carbon Neutral' even after accounting for transportation from China.

Southampton University - Building 85

BCL is currently nearing completion of the external timber cladding to Building 85, The University of Southampton.

BCL have now fully installed the external timber cladding system to the high-profile ‘Building 85’ project at Southampton University . Using Western Red Cedar slats in a "board on board" profile, the project is the first timber cladding project in the UK to use the unique "suncare" laquer system.

Southampton University - Building 85 acoustic wall lining

BCL have now started production of the acoustic wall lining systems for the internal atrium areas of the building.

BCL are now moving inside the building to install the internal bamboo acoustic system to the atrium walls. Building 85 is the first project in the UK to use the BCL bamboo system, after award winning architects NBBJ and leading UK contractor BAM were immediately impressed with its combination of high quality finish and low cost. The inclusion of such ‘low-carbon’ systems like BCL’s have helped lower the buildings footprint and keep within the architects exacting environmental targets.

BCL Technical Download

From January 2010, BCL will be providing a free technical download on External Timber Cladding. This is aimed at providing an excellent reference and technical guide for the architectural community and for anyone currently working with timber cladding. Available only from the BCL website, the handbook contains

  • Design data an overview of all the possible components in a typical timber rainscreen system
  • Drawing details typical details for both blockwork and SFS wall systems
  • Draft specifications everything you need to draft a detailed timber cladding specification
  • Budgets a schedule of budgets for the most popular timber species and the ancillary components
  • Examples images of the various types of timber cladding profiles.

St. George's School - Addlestone

BCL's acoustic system for internal linings has been chosen for the timber soffits / ceiling on the new St. George's School in Addlestone. The project, designed by leading architects Broadway Malyan has been designed to provide a new state of the art 6th form block to the existing school. The design incorporates a beautiful open slat soffit in Western Red Cedar running internally in to the main building...

Sainsbury's - High Wycombe

Sainsbury’s new store in High Wycombe has been designed with the same environmentally conscious planning that is now commonplace for their stores.

With features such as kinetic pads, rain water systems and organic insulation becoming regular features, it was a natural choice to incorporate a ‘green-look’ timber façade into the external design.

BCL’s pre-fabricated system allows the timber envelope to be delivered at minimum cost and impact to the project. The installation time was greatly reduced and crucially the waste was kept to an absolute minimum, producing around just 5% of the waste associated with traditional fixing.

Pre-fabricated ‘board-on-board’ panels were manufactured and installed using BCL’s ‘secret-fixing’ system, a standard for all BCL panels. This provided Bowmer & Kirkland with the unique combination of high-end manufacturing quality and design detail flexibility.

Vertical feature fins, providing solar shading to the car park and other areas were also designed, manufactured and installed by BCL. As standard, all timber used in BCL’s panels were PEFC certified.
